With hurricane Gustav soon to arrive into the Gulf Coast you need to be prepared to evacuate your family and pets. Please, please don’t leave your pet behind. Get ready now by obtaining the supplies you will need to safely transport your bird with you. Have fresh bottled water, feed in a plastic container, newspaper for the transporter and a transport carrier. The cage your small hook bill is housed in maybe sufficient for transporting. For larger hook bills, their cage most likely will be too big so you will need to have a safe container for your bird.
The transporter should be large enough for your bird to turn around, needs to have sufficient air flow, two feed dishes, one for water and other for feed. You may to include a sheet to cover your bird if necessary. Remember to keep your feathered friends away from direct drafts like your car air conditioner. Clearly mark your name, address, and phone number on the cage or carrier.
If you are making a long trip make periodic stops and let your bird out for short periods to reduce the stress. Make sure the birds wings are clipped before heading off. If your bird is tame and trained, place a towel over the seat and let the bird out for short periods. Always keep safety in mine so if it is not safe then keep the bird in the carrier until it is safe to let it out.
There are several excellent carriers available for transport your bird safely. I am personally aware of the Wingabago that is available at Bird Buffet N Things. Optional items like a stainless steel door and wrap are available.
Prepare now so you need to evacuate you can take your bird(s) with you.
